George Langs, Jr.

George Frederick James Langs, Jr., 83, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital where he was supported by Beacon Hospice. He was surrounded by his loving family. Born on October 12, 1939 in Olean, New York, George was the son of the late George and Victoria (Wallen) Langs.

A proud Olean native, George graduated from Olean High School before embarking on his academic journey. He spent his freshman year at St. Bonaventure University before enlisting in the United States Air Force, where he served his country honorably for over 22 years, rising to the rank of Master Sergeant.

During his military career he completed his Bachelor’s degree in history at the University of New Hampshire (UNH), and following his time in the military, George pursued his Master’s degree also at UNH. George was well known for his dedication to the community of Dover. Following the passing of his first wife, Mary Lucille, George took over the presidency of the Dover Widow Support Group. As President he devoted much talent and enthusiasm in ensuring the comfort of the Widow Support Group members.

During this time, George found love again with Patricia (Reilly) Sanderson, and together their love blossomed. They wed on May 29th, 2005 and enjoyed 18 years of wedded happiness. George was a devoted family man who delighted in sharing his Dad Jokes with everyone.

George’s faith played a significant role in his life, and he was an active member of the Parish of the Assumption. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Portsmouth Council #140 where he served as it’s Scribe for many years.

In his leisure time, George had a deep affection for animals, especially his cherished dogs. He was an avid runner and enjoyed the sport of fencing during his earlier years. George was also passionate about history and genealogy, taking great pride in tracing his family lineage back to their early settlement in the United States.

Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, John Langs, David Langs, Linda (Langs) Oakley, and Manon Langs.

Left to cherish George’s memory is his loving wife, Patricia “Pat” Langs of Dover; son, Stephen Langs and wife, Kellie, of Portsmouth; daughter, Deborah McKean, and husband, Ronald, of Annandale, Virginia; sister, Elaine Miers of Davie, Florida; grandchildren, Alexa Langs, Ryan McKean, Kyle McKean; beloved big dogs, Emmy and Nicky; and a host of extended family members and friends.

A visitation for George will be on Monday, July 17, 2023 from 5 PM – 7 PM followed by a Knights of Columbus ceremony at 7 PM at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave, Dover, NH. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Tuesday, July 18 at 11 AM at St. Joseph Church, 150 Central Ave, Dover, NH with burial and military honors following immediately at St. Mary Cemetery in Dover.
